Doaba College of Excellence opened its gates in 2002 with three undergraduate programmes and a little over two hundred students. The intention then was straightforward and has not changed: to give students of Patiala and the surrounding districts a college where good teaching is the priority, where fees remain within reach, and where a student is known by name rather than by roll number.
Today the college teaches more than four thousand students across six departments, from bachelor’s programmes in arts, commerce, science and computer applications to postgraduate degrees and professional diplomas. The campus has grown with the student body — laboratories, a central library, an auditorium, hostels and a sports complex have been added in stages, each funded from the college’s own development reserve.
Affiliated to Punjabi University, Patiala, the college follows the university’s curriculum and examination system. Around that framework it has built its own additions: a mentor–mentee system, a placement cell, remedial classes for students who need them, and a calendar of societies, sport and community service that runs the whole year.
Practical batches are kept small enough that every student gets hands-on time. Faculty hold fixed consultation hours, and attendance and internal performance are reviewed with students each term rather than only at the end of the year.
Fees are set to stay within reach of families across the district, and merit, sports and need-based concessions are available. Government scholarship schemes are processed on campus by a dedicated cell.
NSS and NCC units, literary and science societies, a debating circle, sports teams in six disciplines and an annual cultural festival give students room to lead, organise and compete.
The Training & Placement Cell runs aptitude and communication training from the second year onwards, followed by mock interviews and campus recruitment drives in the final year.
An internal complaints committee, an anti-ragging committee, CCTV coverage of common areas, a women’s cell and a counsellor available through the week keep the campus secure and supportive.
Village adoption, blood donation camps, literacy drives, tree plantation and cleanliness campaigns are run by the NSS units in partnership with the district administration.
The college is founded and receives affiliation for three undergraduate programmes in arts and commerce. The first batch enrols 217 students across two academic blocks.
Science laboratories and the first computer laboratory are commissioned, and B.Sc. and BCA programmes begin. Enrolment passes one thousand students.
Postgraduate teaching begins with M.A. and M.Com., followed by M.Sc. The central library moves into its present building with a dedicated reference and reading wing.
The 600-seat auditorium, the sports complex with a floodlit ground, and separate boys’ and girls’ hostels are completed.
A formal Training & Placement Cell is set up with a full-time placement officer. Campus recruitment becomes a regular annual event across all streams.
Smart classrooms, campus-wide Wi-Fi and an online result portal bring examination results, notices and admission information to students directly.
